Teeth are composed of the hardest substance in the human body, harder even than bone. However, despite their durability it is not uncommon for damage to gradually accumulate, leading to chipped teeth. Furthermore some teeth are crooked to begin with or the person may have had gaps and uneven spacing in their teeth. Teeth may also become discolored or stained over time based on lifestyle factors such as if the person smokes cigarettes, drinks certain beverages such as coffee, tea, or soft drinks, or even eats particular foods. Fortunately there is a dental solution to all of these aesthetic problems: veneers.
What Are Dental Veneers?
A dental veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or plastic that fits over a person’s actual tooth and which is then permanently bonded in place with special dental cement. This results in the chipped, discolored, or crooked tooth being completely covered by the new, uniform veneer. Veneers must typically be permanent because in order to establish a good fit it is often necessary to remove a half millimeter or so from the base tooth’s surface enamel.
